My first year participating in the Me-Made-May Sewing Challenge

Updated: Feb 1, 2019

#mmmay18 This was my first year taking on the Me Made May Sewing Challenge. This was the first year that I even knew it was a thing. I am fairly new to the social media side of sewing. I just started my blog and Instagram account a few months ago, and I am loving being a part of such an inspiring sewing community!

I noticed everyone talking about and getting ready for this thing called "Me Made May". So I looked into it further and came upon the blogpost that explained it all. You can read more about the challenge here. Basically, you get to set the parameters of the challenge specifically for how you want it to go. So I challenged myself to wear something made by me every day in the month of May.

I ended up documenting my outfit everyday against a white backdrop. Then I added the date and a little doodle to every picture. This was in no way part of the challenge, but I chose to do it to help me stay accountable to myself.

There were a number of things I learned by doing this challenge. First, I learned that I need to sew more things that are not only cute, but super comfortable. I need practical items in my wardrobe that I can wear around the house, but will also look good when I go out as well. I noticed a few times that I would put on my me-made item, document it, and then only wear it for a few hours before I was longing to be in something else. So that was a big take-away for me.

Next, I noticed that I tend to sew with a lot of neutral colors, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I am yearning for more color at this point.

I learned that I need to sew more pants and bottoms, and a few more comfortable tops. I have plenty of dresses, I guess I really like to sew dresses!

I loved participating in this challenge. It helped me view my sewing in a whole new light, and I loved being inspired by all of the other amazing sewing women out there! There were so many beautiful outfits to draw inspiration from. Plus, I have so many pattern and fabric possibilities now swimming around in my head!
